Amazingly, we did not get wet during our 33+ mile trek from Danville to Berry Hill Resort in Halifax Co. It really was an excellent ride today, with fun scenery, quirky sights, and a lovely, long ride along a rail-trail conversion called the Ringgold trail.
Here are some pix.

Got to Ashton House for a private look-see at what the current owners of this early twentieth century home have done to restore it. Didn’t want to violate their privacy, so you won’t see any pix from inside, but got a photo of the two neighborhood dogs on the porch from inside.

Ate lunch at Elmo’s Grocery, and saw some interesting sights around there (in the middle of nowhere), including a signpost tree with a resident gnome, and what must have been a church at one time, with a mural of the Last Supper becoming overgrown with weeds.

Finally got to Berry Hill, which should be called Berry “HillS” for all the uphill climbs we had to cover before we got there. Had a fantastic tour led be Lealand, who really knows his stuff, and was an excellent storyteller.

Robert Coles Bruce built the mansion to his beloved wife’s specifications, and we all decided she required so much exact symmetry that she must have had a disorder like OCD.

In a little while, we’ll head to the Resort’s tavern, called Darby’s, for dinner. Hungry, so looking forward to it.
